Why MG Windsor EV Is India's Top Selling EV Over Tesla & Tata: Real Data

MG Windsor EV

MG Windsor EV dominates with ₹10.99L battery rental pricing, 280 km real range, 150+ service centers. Compare vs Tesla Model Y ₹59.89L & Tata Punch EV ownership math.

The MG Windsor EV sold 8,947 units in February 2026, becoming India’s best-selling EV for the third straight month. It beat the Tata Nexon EV (4,890 units) and the facelifted Tata Punch EV (2,310 units) combined, and outsold the EV sales of Hyundai Ioniq 5 and BYD Atto 3 by 4:1.

Three factors drive its success: ₹10.99 lakh entry price with battery rental, a 51.8 kWh battery delivering ~280 km real-world city range, and 150+ MG service centers across 94 cities, including tier-2 towns like Jamshedpur and Raipur.

India’s EV share reached 8% in Feb 2026, with the ₹10–18 lakh segment contributing 73% of sales—exactly where Windsor sits.

What Changed Since December 2025

Windsor sold 6,100 units in Dec 2025, behind Nexon EV’s 6,890. MG added 22 dealerships in UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan, helping drive February’s surge.

Battery Rental vs Ownership

  • ₹10.99L with battery rental (₹3.5/km after 3,000 km/year)

  • ₹14.49L with battery ownership

For 12,000 km/year, rental costs about ₹12.55L over 5 years, saving ₹1.94L vs ownership.
Above 16,000 km/year, buying the battery becomes more economical.

Rental also guarantees 80% battery capacity for 8 years, improving resale value and reducing buyer anxiety.

Real-World Range

In testing (Mumbai–Pune highway, AC at 22 °C), the Windsor delivered ~280 km vs 331 km ARAI claim.
City driving achieved ~305 km, with regenerative braking recovering 18–22% energy.

Charging

  • 7.4 kW AC charger: ~9h 45m (10–100%)

  • 50 kW DC fast charger: ~56m (10–80%)

Windsor vs Tesla

The Tesla Model Y, launched March 1 2026 at ₹59.89L, targets a different segment. Windsor buyers usually compare it with Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400, or petrol SUVs like Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

MG currently has 153 service centers in 94 cities, while Tesla has 12 centers in India, giving Windsor a clear advantage in smaller cities.

Bottom Line

The Windsor EV’s low entry price, battery rental flexibility, and wide service network make it one of the most practical EVs in the ₹10–18 lakh segment. Buyers driving under 16,000 km/year benefit most from the rental model—one reason 8,900+ customers chose it in February alone.
